• Bioluminescence and fluorescence from proteins such as Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) has likely existed in creatures such as jellyfish for millions of years. • GFP is a ~27 kDa protein consisting of 238 amino acids derived from the crystal jellyfish Aequorea victoria. • The 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded jointly to Japanese scientist Osamu Shimomura and US researchers Martin Chalfie and Roger Tsien, for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein (GFP).
